1. Tell us about yourself! (Anything you want to share!)
Hello! I am Dee, owner of Dees Sweets, an online gourmet baking company located in the IE. I am originally from the bay area - Oakland to be exact ;)..but moved to beautiful, sunny, Southern Cali in 2009 with my husband and my two kiddos. I enjoy meeting new people and I have a passion for baking using simple, yet high quality ingredients in my desserts.
2. When did you start your business?
I started Dees Sweets in 2015 and have been loving every minute of it.
3. What got you into desserts? What do you specialize?
Well, my grandmother taught me how to bake at the age of 6, (80’s baby here) my first baking experience was Betty Crocker vanilla cupcakes and chocolate frosting. She measured all of the ingredients and I mixed them with her hand mixer, but forgot to turn it off when I was done mixing....so just imagine a kitchen full of cake batter splattered all over the place, but we managed to get 10 cupcakes baked (and they were delicious I might add). Then I knew it was in the stars for me to become a baker, also I have baked for friends and family who kept telling me to go in business. I specialize in designer cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, brownies and bundt cakes.
4. What does a typical day look like for you at work?
Starting at 6AM fulfilling clients orders; all fresh, no frozen sweets here, shipping or delivering them, responding to emails/social media requests. Staying current with the new trends in this sweet baking world.
5. Do you cater to weddings and other events?
If so, how many do you do in a month? Of course! I love weddings, especially elegant ones. I have also catered birthday parties of all ages, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, retirement parties, baby showers; any special occasion I am willing to take part of it. Right now children’s birthday parties are very popular for me, kids love character cupcakes. I do at least 6 events per month and daily client orders.
6. What is the best part of your job?
Seeing my clients smile, especially children. They know they are getting excellent desserts and every “Thank you so much” lets me know I am doing my job right. I am willing to work with anyone who enjoys sweets just as much as I do.
7. How long does it take to design and create a cake? What other products do you offer to your customers?
If it is a local client who has a sweet tooth and orders something simple like a dozen red velvet cupcakes, then I only need a 24 hour notice. For clients ordering customized desserts for weddings/parties...it depends on their guest count. For example a small wedding for 50 guests, I need at least 2 weeks notice to get prepared for the event. I offer packages for dessert tables, delivery and set up/clean up. I also offer dessert gift baskets.
8. Where is your store front (if you have one)?
Right now I have an online store where clients can order from, but my ultimate goal and dream is to have a storefront.
9. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
Dees Sweets will be a trendy, modern bakery with a dessert truck for local events.
10. What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?
DREAM BIG, but set out small goals and accomplish them. You will always learn new techniques and skills in the baking business, remain open minded and NEVER doubt yourself or your work. You will make mistakes, but those mistakes will make you stronger and wiser in the long run. Find out what makes you unique and achieve your BIG DREAM.
11.We know creating delicious goods takes a lot of patience and work, how do you balance personal life and your business?
I have at least 1-2 days out of the week where I devote all of my time with my family. Holiday seasons can be pretty hectic, but after they are over I take 1 week off from my business to relax and regroup.
