Miss Mini Donuts
1. Tell us about yourself!:
A little about myself. My name is Leslie Nguyen and I own a whiskey bar and restaurant in Newport Beach and in Houston TX called Bosscat Kitchen+Libations. I help run Ten Asian Bistro and Miss Mini Donuts is my side Hustle.
2. When did you start your business?
I actually started MMD before I started Bosscat. 5 years ago. But when I decided to open the whiskey bar, I had no time and had to put my donuts away. I recently brought Miss. Mini back to life about a year ago.
3. What got you into desserts?
I love to eat a variety of things and have a variety of flavors. I love donuts, but I never want to eat a whole donut. I want to try all of them and have different flavors. So having a smaller sized donut gave the opportunity to eat different flavors without having to eat a whole entire donut.
What do you specialize? Mini Donuts. I'm working on a gluten free protein packed version.
4. What does a typical day look like for you at work?
Oh boy this is a loaded question. My job is definitely not boring. Each day is different and there is no set schedule. My typical day starts at 5AM or depending on what time orders need to be fulfilled. My favorite part of the day is when no one is in the kitchen and I get to make my mini donuts with the music cranked up. After all my pick ups and delivery my day job starts with Bosscat. Usually there are meetings and getting everyone aligned. We have our plan of attack for the week and the month. I am in charge of all of our marketing so there lots of social media, photos, videos, and emails going on. Lunch Service I usually go and help with servers touch on our regulars and make sure managers are all ok. Afternoon depends on what I am working on. We are opening a new store right now in Houston so currently I am deciding on how I want the table to look like and decor. I handmade a lot of our decor so a lot of my time is spent doing arts and crafts. Late afternoon is more social media and then we go into dinner service. I usually help run food and touch tables to make sure everyone is having a good time. Our job is to create an atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy. I need to make sure that my staff is doing that.
5. Do you cater to weddings and other events?
Yes I cater to all sorts of parties. Weddings, engagements, gender reveal, baby showers, birthdays, right now I am holiday focused. Lots of holiday parties. I also do kids parties where I set up stations and the kids get to decorate their own minis. They love doing that!
If so, how many do you do in a month? Right now I am about 8 a month and I get orders daily.
6. What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is watching people faces light up when they see how cute the donuts are or knowing that I am helping with my donuts. A lot of business people use my donuts for marketing and they all tell me what a great response they get so I feel like I am helping them with their business. If I have the opportunity help someone else make their day better, I will go out of my way to do so.
7. How long does it take to design and create a cake?
It takes me about 30 min to make a batch of mini donuts and 1 hour to decorate , depending on how detailed my guest want their donuts. What other products do you offer to your customers? I have done full dessert bars. I do mini cupcakes, cakes with mini donuts on them, mini pop tarts, and chocolate dipped Oreos.
8. Where is your store front (if you have one)?
I do not have a brick a motor yet, but I work out of Bosscat Kitchen+Libations and made to order so they are fresh.
9. Where do you see your business in 5 years?
I see lots of stores that are close to my other businesses. Or maybe combine my concepts. I want to do a Champagne and Mini Donut Bar.
10. What advice would you give to someone who wants to follow in your footsteps?
Follow your dreams and passion. These little minis have become my passion. A lot of people told me to not do the donuts because it wouldn't yield as much for me as my bars, but I never listen to people and just do what I want and what make me happy. I am not driven by money and I don't care if I don't become rich at this. I just love making them and making other people happy. WORK hard! You have to put in the work. It's not easy to wake up early everyday to follow your dream and then work another 18 hours. But to succeed you must put in work, save money and give without expecting to receive. Always remember your "Why." Marketing is everything. Be on top of your game on this! HUSTLE HUSTLE HUSTLE.
11. We know creating delicious goods takes a lot of patience and work, how do you balance personal life and your business?
Ohhhh good question. When you find out the answer to that please tell me. I am trying to learn life balance myself. It has been my number 1 pitfall. I love what I do too much.
